The Forgiveness of God
Posted under: Faith Journey
When he misbehaves, my 3 year old son Caleb will often ask me, “Momma, can you forgive me?” He is very persistent and will repeat the question until I answer with a hearty “Yes!” and mean it from the heart! Even at his sweet young age, my son sincerely wants to be forgiven when he knows he has done wrong. What a great reminder for me to be honest, persistent, and sincere in seeking forgiveness when I fail!
Having children has taught me much about the forgiveness of God. I’m constantly asking God to forgive me for harsh words and unkind actions that arises from anger and are aimed at my children. Thankfully, there is no limit to God’s forgiveness because I need it throughout each day! God’s patience with my failures encourages me to express forgiveness to my boys when they need it. God waits for me to change wrong behaviors and selfish attitudes so that I can learn to do the same for my sons. He forgives me because it is in his nature to do so, not because I’m deserving of it. There is nothing I can do to earn or lose his forgiveness. The only prerequisite is repentance, an acknowledgment that I have messed up and need his help. This my friends, is where many of us are stuck. Stuck because we are stubborn, foolish, prideful, and ignorant. We are stubborn in wanting to do life our way, foolish in thinking we know what is best for ourselves, prideful in believing that we don’t need God, and ignorant to the truth that we need the forgiveness of God.
Friends, may I ask you a question? Are you stuck in your stubbornness, foolishness, pride, or ignorance? Stuck to the point of being unrepentant? In order to receive the forgiveness of God you must be willing to see that you need his forgiveness. And you need his forgiveness because God says that all people have fallen short of the standards he has set for us. By accepting God’s forgiveness, you get a fresh start. I urge you to come to God honestly, persistently, and with sincerity in asking for forgiveness because God will always give a hearty “Yes!” and mean it from his heart. You won’t regret it, I promise!
