When I was single, I'd always hope for a love interest so Valentine’s Day wouldn't be so unbearable.  I thought if I had someone to celebrate the day with, I would feel loved.  So, I did my best to get noticed and to receive attention, hoping maybe I would find love.  I didn't know what love meant but I knew I needed it.  I hungered for it.  Sadly though, I was looking for it in all the wrong people and places.  I longed to know that I matter to someone, anyone.  I always thought I was crazy for feeling this way.  I hated myself for being so needy, for wanting to be loved.  I didn’t know that God created me with the need to be loved so that I would feel valued, accepted and purposeful.  God created all of us this way so it is natural that we yearn for love and go searching for it.  To our detriment though, we turn to man for the interpretation of love instead of God.  It is no surprise then that our attempts at love often fails.  Perhaps, we need to consider what God has to say about love.

The Bible says that love comes from God and that God is love.  Yes, love is a character trait of God and he defines it this way in chapter 13 of the book of First Corinthians.  Love is patient and kind.  Love is not jealous, or boastful, or proud or rude.  Love does not demand its own way.  Love is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged.  Love does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out.  Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.   This is the love God wants us to experience and imitate yet we have told him, “No thanks, we’ll do it our way”.  So, we turn to Hollywood, celebrities, and the culture to get ideas on how to give and receive love.  We mimmick what we see on sitcoms and movies.  We go looking for love in flings, one night stands, affairs, and cohabitate to see if we can get the feelings of love.  Tragically, these experimental attempts at love leaves us feeling less and less loved over time.  So, we do the same things again and again and again and again and again and again believing that true love hasn’t come to us yet because we just haven’t met our soul mate.  I know this cycle well because it was my life!  It was a vicious and destructive lifestyle that left me empty and always in search of love because I never truly had it.

Friends, if this is where you find yourself today don’t despair.  There is hope.  Truly, there is hope.  You can get out from the deadly cycle of looking for love in all the wrong people and places.  You don’t have to try harder to get love.  It is available to you because God created you and when you become his child, you inherit his character trait of love.  He has an incredible love for you and he is waiting for you to receive it.  Yes, you!  I know it is extremely difficult to see past your present circumstance but aren’t you ready to experience real love?  The kind that fills you up deep in your soul?  Love that doesn’t hurt and will not leave in the morning?  This is the love God offered me and he offers it to you.  Don’t wait another moment friends but receive God’s love today.  You are so incredibly worthy of this love.  Believe it because it comes from the heart of God.  Accept his love and you will no longer go looking for love in all the wrong people and places.  I’m rooting for you!
