Following God is not always easy when we feel lost, as if God is not leading us or as if we have lost sight of Him. It is important to understand in these moments that God always has a plan—a plan for you to know Him more deeply. Here are six things to consider when you feel “lost” on your spiritual journey:

Listen closely. Very often, we are telling God what we need from Him, but what would happen if we took time to listen? What you think is best for your life may not be what God knows is best for your life. Remember, God sees the whole picture. Your life is laid out before Him. Keep that in mind when asking things of Him. Let’s follow the example Jesus set when He prayed, “Not My will, but Yours, be done.” (Luke 22:42)

Read the Word. It is important that fervent prayer be supplemented by meditation on the Word of God. It is often by reading God’s written Word that we hear Him speak into our lives and get to know Him more deeply. It is for this reason that He has revealed Himself and His instruction in the Bible.

Heed instruction. Proverbs 12:1 says, “Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.” (NIV) It is important to understand that when you feel stuck, you are not alone! Often times, you will find that people have gone through many of the same things you are experiencing on your spiritual journey. A common misunderstanding is that we have to figure out life on our own, but this is not the case. In fact, God created us to heed instruction, give instruction, and live in unity with one another on our journeys through life on earth. This is why Psalm 133:1 says, “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” (NIV)

Be patient. When action is needed, light will come. Until then, be patient in the knowledge that has been revealed to you. Those who are willing to be patient are those willing to grow.

Don’t be afraid to take a step even though you don’t see the whole picture. It’s easier for God to steer a moving ship rather than one that stays on the dock.

Finally, above all else,

Seek God’s glory, not personal security, for that is already taken care of. It is for God’s glory that you were created, and if you seek to glorify Him in all that you do, you will see Him guiding your steps.
